Vasili Zhuravlyov - Kosmicheskiy reys (1935)

A silent film in concert, for electric guitar, theremin, glockenspiel, hammered dulcimer and loop station (2015).

First shown in theaters in January 1936 "Kosmicheskiy reys" (Космический рейс) is an epoch-making achievement of soviet scientific realism. Despite its delicatley staged idea of space exploration through massive streamlined space planes, its revolutionary allegories and its monumental framing, it failed the tenets of social realism and was removed from theatres by soviet censors soon after its release. It was kept sealed from public until the 1980s. No score was written for the film although some theatres played along fragments of music by Brahms and Prokoviev. Cornelius Berkowitz' newly composed score with its harmonic, microtonal and rhythmic shifts acts like an additional structure applied to the surfaces of the architecture and landscapes of the film. The scoring premiers in its live performance at club ASTRA.
