Producing since his early teens, London based Jim Coles started with jungle before progressing to the world of turntablism under the name ’2tall’, representing the UK in the DMC World DJ Championships. In 2008 Coles retired this moniker and reset the clocks as Om Unit. The producer first made his mark with a reworking of Joker’s ‘Digi Design’ before appearances on Fabric’s ‘Elevator Music’ compilation, All City Records, Pinch’s Tectonic, Berlin’s Project Mooncircle and Plastician’s Terrorhythm imprint.
Prior to the release of his acclaimed debut album ‘Threads’ on Civil Music in 2013 Cole’s released three EPs for the label that established his slow/fast sound. ‘The Timps’, a sub-aquatic journey into electro, ‘Transport’, a collection of experiments in mechanical soul and slow/fast, and ‘Aeolian’ two years later, a cinematic journey through modern jungle. ‘Threads’ reconciled all Cole’s work and influences and included vocals appearances from Young Echo’s MC Jabu, legendary urban poet Charlie Dark, Gone The Hero and Jinadu. Grounded in his junglistic roots, referencing his hip hop background and anchored by the bassweight of dubstep, the album established him as one of the most consistent and original artists in the electronic sphere.
In 2011/2012 Om Unit created a link between classic jungle and chicago footwork with both his (now retired) ‘Phillip D Kick’ Footwork/Jungle alias, and his collaborative effort with Machinedrum (as Dream Continuum on Planet Mu), paving the way for a now burgeoning Footwork/Jungle scene. 2013 saw him championed as an exciting new voice in DnB with releases on dBridge’s Exit records and Goldie’s legendary Metalheadz label, continuing through 2014 with his reworking Doc Scott’s legendary ‘Shadow Boxing’ for its re-release on 31 Recordings and ‘Inversion’ a new extended project with classic potential for Metalheadz that balances introspective and energetic moments and features Jehst and rare unearthed samples from Goldie’s archives.
Not content with pushing boundaries from the studio with his own productions or via his in-demand DJ sets at the worlds premiere festivals and clubs across Europe, North and South America, Asia and Oceania, Om Unit owns and runs his own imprint ‘Cosmic Bridge Records’. Launched in 2011 Cole’s A&R sensibilities have given us a new wave of beat production in the realm of his signature “slow/fast” sound. The label has released material from Kromestar, Boxcutter and Om Unit himself, as well as Moresounds, EAN and Danny Scrilla; who after making their debuts for the label have gone on to make waves. This first draft of Cosmic Bridge artists all contributed to 2014′s widely applauded Om Unit curated ‘Cosmology’ label compilation.
“Om” The supreme and most sacred syllable, and believed to be the spoken essence of the universe. “Unit” a single thing or person.
